Almost every doctor has experienced a near-death experience…
Doctors, for patients, the most beautiful word in the world is the hope of life and the gospel of life. Without the treatment and health guidance of doctors, the tens of thousands of “patients” behind each doctor are equivalent to losing the blessing of health! ! But to our surprise, doctors who have better health knowledge, better understanding of health care, and better health management capabilities than ordinary people have an average life span that is 13 years shorter than ordinary people!
Recently, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the country with miraculous medical skills and “magic medicines”, released a survey showing that the average life span of Indian doctors is only 59 years old, while in comparison, the life span of ordinary Indians is about At 72 years old, there is a difference of 13 years!
Doctors live 13 years shorter than ordinary people! From/IMA
A study made by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has concluded that doctors, who help patients stay fit, are dying younger as they themselves do not follow the instructions. The data shows that an average Indian lives up to 69-72 years, whereas a doctor lives only up to 55-59 years which is shocking.
It was noticed that most early deaths occur due to cardiac arrests and early malignancies. Inadequate sleep, irregular eating timings, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise are the main culprits that contribute to the phenomenon.
The results of this study show that doctors in India are most vulnerable and prone to early death between the ages of 45-65. Only after retirement at the age of 65, with less stress and a regular schedule, will their life span be naturally extended to over 75 years old.
In addition, research also shows that the most common causes of premature death among Indian doctors are [cardiovascular disease] and [malignant tumors] .
Although this study is about the current life span of Indian doctors, there is no relevant data on the life span of doctors in my country. However, in recent years, cases of sudden death of Chinese doctors have been frequent, and they tend to be younger. It is common among Chinese doctors who are fighting on the front line of clinical practice. Due to bad living habits and high risks, doctors have become a “high-risk” profession.
Doctors died suddenly every month in 2017!
On January 11, 2022, Zhoukou Daily reported that a 55-year-old doctor in Henan suddenly died on the front line of the fight against the epidemic;
On April 20, 2022, Dr. Pan from the Anesthesiology Department of Shenzhen Second Hospital died suddenly;
On April 20, 2022, the deputy chief physician of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ninth People’s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine died suddenly;
On May 11, 2022, the executive vice president of Beijing Millennium Monument Hospital passed away in the ICU;

Doctors are not as healthy as ordinary people
There is an interesting set of data in the 2013 “China Cardiovascular Disease Report” – the health of doctors is actually worse than that of ordinary people.
Data show that 1/4 of doctors now suffer from cardiovascular disease, and the prevalence rate among doctors is 25% higher than 1/5 of the national population; 1/2 of doctors have high blood pressure and are over 40 years old. The prevalence rate among male physicians is twice that of the general population. The incidence rates of hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and fatty liver among physicians are increasing year by year, and the number of malignant tumors discovered during physical examinations is also gradually increasing.

Almost every doctor has experienced a near-death experience
In 2014, Beijing Youth Daily launched an investigation into doctors’ fatigue.
The survey shows that nearly half of the doctors participating in the survey work at least one night shift every week, 80% have no more than half an hour’s lunch break, and many even only have 10 minutes for lunch and lunch break. Nearly 80% of doctors work 8 to 12 hours a day. Almost all doctors have worked continuously for more than 24 hours, half have worked continuously for more than 36 hours, and about 20% of doctors have even worked continuously for more than 48 hours.
“I have to work night shifts and weekend shifts at least 1-2 times a week, plus outpatient clinics, ward rounds, surgeries, writing medical records, writing papers, and even dealing with medical representatives. I believe every doctor has experienced that feeling of dying. “
——The heartfelt words of a chief physician working in the otolaryngology department of a tertiary hospital
Those angels in white who were so tired that they died from overwork
Years of lack of sleep, irregular work and rest schedules of two shifts, irregular eating hours, unhealthy eating habits, long-term lack of physical exercise, huge psychological pressure, self-disease taking precedence over the patient, etc. are potential health risks… in multiple Under pressure, as a doctor, he often neglects his own health and ignores the most basic physical examination once a year, which has become the norm for doctors.
Faced with too many “patients” who don’t understand health care, too many who don’t understand health management, and too many who don’t understand medical care, this kind of professional living situation also directly affects the patient’s satisfaction and even affects the patient’s recovery effect. An excellent doctor who could have served patients for decades ended up collapsing beside the operating table after a few years of high-intensity, high-load work.

In 2021, a German lifespan study spanning more than 500 years established a large new data set of more than 30,000 scholars, spanning the 16th to the early 20th centuries.
In the study, academics engaged in the medical profession are listed separately. The study shows that whether in large or small university institutions or in more advanced scientific academies, the life expectancy of medical practitioners has always been lower than that of academics in other professions.
While the life expectancy of scholars in other majors began to climb after the 18th century, comrades studying medicine were still dragging down the average life span for nearly a hundred years.

In fact, as early as 2019, a survey released by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) showed that the average life expectancy of Indian doctors is only 59 years, while the life expectancy of ordinary Indians is 72 years, a difference of 13 years.
Anesthesiologists have the highest sudden death rate, followed closely by orthopedics and cardiovascular medicine
“Death from overwork” means that during the non-physiological labor process, the worker’s normal work rules and life rules are destroyed, fatigue accumulates in the body and transfers to the overwork state, causing blood pressure to rise, arteriosclerosis to aggravate, and then appear fatal condition.
At this stage, especially during the epidemic, doctors are generally overworked.
Before the epidemic in 2017, a retrospective study published in “Public Health” pointed out that overwork is the silent killer of Chinese doctors. Death from overwork has become a serious problem in China, and doctors are also prone to sudden death.

(A).Age of doctors who died suddenly from 2013-2015.
(B). Distribution of karoshi cases in various provinces in China from 2013 to 2015.
(C). Distribution of continuous working hours of doctors who died suddenly from 2013 to 2015.
(D).Doctor overwork death cases by specialty from 2013 to 2015.
The study summarized the cases of doctors who died from overwork reported between 2013 and 2015. The analysis found that before sudden death, more than half of the doctors had worked continuously for 8 to 12 hours, and 11 of them had worked continuously for ≥ 24 hours (Figure 1C). Sudden death was most common in the anesthesiology department, accounting for 26.1% of all cases, followed by the orthopedics and cardiovascular medicine departments (Figure 1D).
The study also found that the number of cases of karoshi among Chinese doctors increased from 2013 to 2015. It has previously been reported that the leading medical causes of karoshi are heart attacks and stress-induced strokes. However, these are not the only reasons for doctors to die from overwork. Low wages, a large shortage of medical practitioners, etc. have also been found to be causes of illness among doctors.
Top 10 danger signs of “death from overwork”, how many have you caught?
The Japan “Koshi” Prevention Association once reminded the body of the top ten danger signs:
1. “General’s belly” appears early;
2. Hair loss, alopecia areata, and premature baldness;
3. Go to the bathroom frequently;
4. Decreased sexual ability;
5. Memory loss;
6. Mental arithmetic ability is getting worse and worse;
7. Frequently regret doing things, being irritable, irritable, pessimistic, and having difficulty controlling one’s emotions;
8. The ability to concentrate is getting worse;
9. Sleeping time is getting shorter and shorter, and it is difficult to wake up from fatigue;
10. I often have headaches, tinnitus, and dizziness, and the examination has no results.
Those with the above two items are in the “yellow light” warning period. There is no need to worry yet, but you need to change your living habits. Those with the above three to five items are in the “red light” forecast period, indicating that there are signs of excessive fatigue. If there are more than six items, it will be two “red light” dangerous periods, and great attention must be paid to it and intervention must be initiated.
(The author checked the numbers and won at least 4 items. I have already begun to shiver in the 30-degree summer…)
write at the end
Medical staff are generally overworked, which is both a medical problem and a social problem. To solve this problem, public hospital reform is urgent.
Voices calling attention to the “general overwork problem of medical care” have been going on for quite some time, but we don’t know how long there is to go. The author believes that relevant regulations should be formulated and implemented as soon as possible to ensure reasonable working hours for medical workers, so as to prevent and reduce the phenomenon of medical workers dying from overwork.
The editor will continue to speak out and call on the public to give more understanding and trust to medical workers in order to reduce the psychological and social pressure of medical workers.
